Freeware Proxy Server - Why Free Proxies Don't Work

A freeware proxy server is good because they are free, but that is about as good as they get.  If protecting your identity is important to you, using free proxies is probably the worst thing you could do.  Here are two things you should know about free proxies.

Free proxies typically use software that is web based.  Setting up these kinds of proxies can be done on almost any web hosting account.  The downside to this is that the proxy is detectable as a proxy.  What does this mean?  It means that while you are using these kinds of proxies, any website can examine your proxy IP and see that you are using a proxy.  Many websites block access from any IPs that they detect as coming from a proxy server.

Another reason to avoid free proxies is because many of them aren't even anonymous.  They are transparent and pass your identity on to the website you are accessing.  This is in no way hiding or protecting your identity online.  Websites can see the IP that your home computer is using and they know exactly where you live.

Setting up a freeware proxy server is quick and easy, but free comes with limitations.  Many free proxies are not even anonymous and using them is the same as surfing the internet from your home computer without a proxy.  Even if they are anonymous, free proxies are usually easily detected as proxies and you may find that many websites block access from IPs that are detected as proxy IPs.  A better solution is to use an elite proxy to stay anonymous online.
